Asbestos data collection in schools

In March 2015, the Department of Education (DfE) published the review of its policy on the management of asbestos in schools. The outcomes from the review included issuing of updated guidance, Managing Asbestos in your school, and a call for a clearer picture of how asbestos is managed in schools across England.

To obtain a better understanding of how asbestos is managed in schools, the DfE has now developed a questionnaire with a small number of questions for all Head Teachers to answer. Once the survey has been completed, feedback will be given immediately and advice given, based on their responses.

The questionnaire is for Head Teachers (or their equivalent) in all English maintained schools, academies, university technical colleges, studio schools, sixth-form colleges and free schools. Its aim is to raise awareness of the importance of asbestos management and help the DfE understand how to support schools better in the future.

The short online questionnaire has just 10 questions and a guidance document has been issued to assist schools in completing it. The deadline for completion is Monday 29 February 2016. A good return from schools will increase the understanding of the current situation and will help determine whether further action is required.

Access to both the online questionnaire and guidance can be found on the GOV.UK website and can be completed from 28 January until 29 February 2016.
